New poll: Property taxesTell North Platte what you think

Many property taxpayers are outraged at ever-increasing hikes, and an effort is underway to circulate a petition among voters to amend the state constitution and limit those taxes. What do you think?

Vote in our reader’s poll at the lower right hand side of the front page of this website.

Sen. Tom Brewer, who represents the area of the state north of Lincoln County, is one of the leaders of the effort.

In a recent column, Brewer said he and his staff have had weekly discussions on the topic since January, talking to groups of concerned citizens and many senators.

Sen. Steve Erdman, who represents District 47 west of Lincoln County, is leading the effort.

The idea is to reduce property taxes by about 30%, but not impact revenue currently collected by local units of government, namely schools, Brewer said.

Brewer said the details of the language of the proposal are being worked out.

“Hopefully, one way or another, either through the people on a ballot initiative, or Sen. Erdman’s resolution, we will have real property relief for the first time in generations,” he said.

Brewer believes it is important to have the people (the second House of government in Nebraska) propel this forward as a ballot initiative.
