Sheldon statewide show to open in October: Meet Your MatchTell North Platte what you think

The Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is home to one of the most extensive art collections in the state, and the mission of the museum is to present its holdings to a diverse general public across Nebraska.

The Sheldon Statewide program, a touring educational art exhibition, aims to make the collections held at the museum available to audiences across Nebraska.

Since 1987, Sheldon Statewide has traveled to more than 20 communities, bringing 80,000 Nebraskans into close contact with one of the state’s greatest public treasures, organizers say.

Our team has recently reinstalled Sheldon’s permanent collection with a special “laboratory gallery” that features eight works of art, grouped in pairs.

At first, works of art may seem disparate, but upon thoughtful consideration, conversation and comparisons emerge.

Side-by-side juxtaposition prompts visitors to compare and contrast, noting differences in medium, composition, subject matter, mood and historical context while also discovering points of connection and similarity.

Meet Your Match presents these pairings as visual prompts – open-ended questions that challenge viewers to actively generate their own ideas, organizers say.

The display strategy encourages increased visual literacy, creativity in interpretation, and a deeper engagement with individual objects.

The show will also includes works by artists in the immediate area. It will be held at the Prairie Arts Center.

The show is free to the public. For educational materials, see http://www.sheldonartmuseum.org/sheldon-statewide-0

Organizers ask you to book your tours early and thank you for supporting the arts.

The event chairperson is Julie Jacobson at 308-530-3230 or mbjacobson@charter.net

Exhibition signage and local art display is by Molly O’Holleran (530-3973) and Wava Best (530-0352).

The Art Study League members decorate with local art in the PAC Focus Gallery at 10 a.m. Monday Oct. 2.

The public opening reception is from 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3. For more info about that, call Cheri Erickson (539-2469) and Ruth Carson (534-4549).
