Foot pursuit ends at courthouseTell North Platte what you think

Austin Shelly, 20, was wanted by authorities after he failed to appear to face his third set of charges this year. Police found him Sunday night.

At 9:32 p.m. Sunday, officers received information that Shelly was near Third and Chestnut. When they approached Shelly, he ran away. Police chased him on foot for a couple blocks. When they neared the Lincoln County Courthouse, Shelly gave up.

Officers found a baggie nearby containing several pills, next to the point of surrender, police spokesman John Deal said.

Deal said the pills were determined to be Methlyphenidate Hydrochloride – often known as Ritalin, a drug to treat hyper-activity disorder.

When Shelly was searched, a pair of brass knuckles were found in his pocket, which are considered a deadly weapon.  Shelly was taken to jail, charged with resisting arrest, which is normally a misdemeanor but was enhanced to a felony because of a prior conviction. He is also charged with possession of a controlled substance and a concealed weapon.

Shelly was previously charged this year with repeated probation violations, criminal mischief and resisting officers.

His bond is set at $25,000, according to sheriff’s records.
