College seeks volunteer mentorsTell North Platte what you think

Businessmen and women are needed to mentor students at Mid-Plains Community College.

It’s part of a new Success Mentor Program, the goal of which is to help students find a career path that is right for them by pairing them with local employers in the students’ field of interest.

“Being part of the program will also give our students something they can put on a résumé,” said Hayley Kobza, SMP coordinator. “It will teach them job and life skills and help them build relationships with potential employers. Upon successful completion of the program, they will receive certificates, which will be awarded during MPCC’s Honors Convocation ceremonies.”

The mentors will benefit by being able to shape and mold an up-and-coming workforce. They will also be in the running for ‘Mentor of the Year’ awards and will receive the personal satisfaction of supporting the college and helping students achieve their dreams.

The time commitment is 1-2 hours per month. No more than two students will be paired with each mentor.

“Basically, the students will be job shadowing their mentors,” said Kobza. “I wish I could have done something like SMP when I was in college. I always thought I wanted to be a nurse, and then I took biology and anatomy and decided nursing wasn’t for me. I could have saved a lot of time and money if a program like SMP would have been available.”

Currently, the program is only open to students on MPCC’s campuses in North Platte and McCook.

Those interested in serving as mentors can contact Kobza in McCook at 344-8057 or kobzah@mpcc.edu. North Platte employers can contact Berva Arensdorf, MPCC employment services coordinator, at 535-3689 or arensdorfb@mpcc.edu.
