State inmate escapes work-release centerTell North Platte what you think

Shortly before midnight on Friday, an inmate at a corrections center in Lincoln broke a window, climbed a fence and escaped.

Frederick Patterson, 40, did not get far.

Patterson was at the Community Corrections Center, a facility for inmates on work-release. He pitched a fit inside the center before he tried to escape, so authorities there called law enforcement.

The Lincoln Police, Lancaster County sheriff's deputies, and the Nebraska State Patrol responded, and Patterson was caught in a field next to the facility, Corrections spokeswoman Dawn-Renee Smith said.

Patterson had tested positive for methamphetamine. Smith said when staff members tried to restrain him, he tried to get out the door. When that didn't work, he threw stuff at staff members, used an object to break a window, climbed into the yard, then climbed the fence and ran.

After he was caught, Patterson was taken to a local hospital and treated for unspecified minor injuries. Then he went to the Lincoln Correctional Center (penitentiary), pending investigation. No staff members were injured in the incident, Smith said.

Patterson is serving 18-38 years for robbery, theft, criminal mischief and fleeing to avoid arrest in Douglas County.

He was scheduled for a parole hearing in September, with a tentative release in February 2020, according to prison records.
