Michael Romero, 20, was arrested Monday evening and charged with damaging a pickup early that morning at Cody Park.

The damage was reported at 5:37 a.m., police spokesman John Deal said.

A 21-year-old man told police that several individuals beat his 2016 GMC Denali pickup with baseball bats, bottles and other objects -- breaking windows and denting the body.

The man said he was in his pickup when the men arrived and began to beat on it. The estimated damage was around $8,000, Deal said.

Michael Romero emerged as one of the suspects.

Deal said police were told that at some point in the fracas, Romero reached in to pickup and took an AR-15 rifle.

The police were able to recover the rifle later in the day, Deal said.

Officers contacted Romero around 9 p.m. Monday and charged him with criminal mischief and theft.

Deal said the investigation is still underway.
