Sutherland Chamber of Commerce

Grand Marshals Bob and Sherry Maline smiled and waved Tuesday as they led the annual July 4th parade through the streets of Sutherland.

On a sunny day with temperatures in the lower 90s, spectators found places under shade trees or donned umbrellas, hats and sunscreen, lining streets to watch the parade, which went by the theme of “Nebraska — 150 Years of the Good Life.”

Volunteers handed out cold water and several floats brought water guns to delight children who ran to the edge of the street to be drenched.

Sutherland resident Jan Dancer helps organize the parade and said the Lion’s Club selects each year’s grand marshal.

“The Malines are certainly worthy of the honor,” Dancer said. “They have done a lot for the community and we are lucky to have them.”

The couple owns and operates Maline’s Super Foods Grocery on the west edge of town. They have lived in Sutherland for 27 years.

“It is pretty special for my wife and I to be chosen,” Bob said. “We try to help with the celebration and have been involved with the (annual) Chamber meal for quite a few years.”

For Dancer, it is the 25th year she has helped organize the parade.

“I am in charge of accepting entries and making sure that everyone who wants to be judged has an entry number,” she said. “I accepted entries until 6 p.m. Monday. And, along with those entries, there are a lot in the parade today who marched, but did not care about being judged.

Although the number of entries was a little less this year, there was still a good turnout, Dancer said.

Dancer said the village celebration is “always a good time for everyone involved” with its rodeo, kids games, good food and music.
