Errors cost Juniors in loss to KearneyTell North Platte what you think

The North Platte First National Bank Juniors committed five errors on Tuesday in an 8-2 loss to Kearney at Bill Wood Field.

"Kearney doesn't beat themselves," Juniors coach Andy Butler said. "It's tough because we're good enough to compete with Kearney, but not with five errors."

North Platte pitcher Tyler Ferguson held Kearney (20-7) scoreless in the first inning. But they were able to get to him in the second.

A bunt single by Brandt Groskreutz loaded the bases with no one out. The first run scored when Sam Engberg hit a single up the middle. Then another run scored when Trey Rodriguez reached on an error by shortstop Braden Stiffler.

Two more runs came across for Kearney when Chandler Welker reached on another error. Brayden Miller then got an RBI with a sacrifice for the first out to make it 5-0.

After that, Ferguson rebounded and got out of the inning without any more damage done.

"We usually do a good job of limiting our errors to just one," Butler said. "But we let it snowball and turn into two and three."

Kearney scored a run in the third and two more in the fourth. North Platte (7-12) was in danger of seeing the game end early in the fifth due to the run rule. But they were able to finally put up some offense against Kearney pitcher Jaxon Worley.

With two outs, Caleb Horne kept the First Nationals alive with a double to right field. Then Jacob Swift scored Horne with a bloop single to center.

But that was all the Nationals could muster against Kearney. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings and Kearney held on for the victory.

"When we need to get runs, we find a way to get them," Butler said. "We're a solid team but we need to have a complete game."
