Two people were killed Thursday evening in a wreck on Interstate 80 west of Ogallala, when a pickup crossed the highway into oncoming traffic.

The crash occurred just after 8:30 p.m. Thursday, when an eastbound Toyota Tacoma crossed the median and hit an oncoming Dodge pick-up head-on, NSP spokesman Cody Thomas said.

Both drivers were killed.

Aaron James Davis, 38, of Greeley, Colo. was drving the Dodge pickup and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota pick-up, Kent T. Brakken, 71, of Cedaredge, Colo. was taken to Ogallala Community Hospital and later died.

Thomas said the wreck was five miles west of Ogallala. Westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for about 3.5 hours while troopers conducted their investigation and the wreckage was cleared.

Seat belts were used in both vehicles. The specific cause is still under investigation, but medical issues have been ruled out, Thomas said Friday afternoon.
