Young Matt Woodward received special recognition Tuesday night from both Mayor Dwight Livingston and Fire Chief Dennis Thompson, for Woodward’s quick actions to stem a house fire on West Fourth. The young “fire department hero” was honored before the North Platte city council.
Woodward and his mother were driving down the street May 14 when they saw the fire. As his mother called 911, Matt, 11, went to the house and knocked.
Hearing no response, he found a garden hose, turned it on and shot water through a window until the fire department arrived.
Thompson said his actions prevented much greater damage to the house, as he presented recognition certificate to Woodward for his courageous contributions.
A dozen North Platte firefighters who were on duty at the time attended the council meeting to congratulate and honor the young volunteer. They brought fire trucks with them and afterwards, went to the parking lot to hang out and talk with Woodward under less demanding conditions than the day they met.
