Seventeen antique Model A cars from a Denver car club traveled across the state and stopped Sunday night at the Comfort Inn in North Platte.

They had driven 335 miles that day from Orange City, Iowa, where the 39 travelers attended a Tulip Festival.

The “Horseless Carriages,” as one license plate read, had only minor problems during the trip, although one Model A broke down a half-mile after leaving home.

That couple returned home, then made the journey in their modern car, along with another modern car, helping with breakdowns and safety precautions for the slower moving antique cars.

Each car in the caravan communicates with the others by way of CB radios. Dick Przywitowski is the technical director, but he was not available for interview.

When asked ‘Why do you belong to this club?’ one motorist replied ‘I enjoy our Model A and they were meant to be driven.’”

The club usually makes two long trips each year, along with several short trips.

The rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of the travelers. The Model A runs best in cool weather, according to the club’s website, www.mafcc.org

Before each trip, members are advised to check the brakes, radiator water, engine oil, transmission fluid, differential oil, and to grease the U-joint, lube the water pump and chassis, pack and adjust the front wheel bearings, check the ignition components as well as the tire pressure, headlights and the horn, the website says.
