The Nebraska Public Power District will spend about $1.5 million to renovate a new operations center in Ogallala.Steele Roofing and Construction, Inc., of North Platte will do the work.
The Ogallala Operations Center will combine three existing NPPD facilities -- a retail customer service/distribution center, a substation garage and shop, and a telecommunications/substation technician building, NPPD spokesman Mark Becker said.
The new facility will be located in the former Bomgaars retail store, which is about seven blocks east of Main St. / A St., and about a block south of U.S. Highway 30.
Renovations are expected to be complete in early 2018.
“Consolidating our operations will provide efficiencies and improve customer service,” NPPD Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Tom Kent said. “By renovating an existing facility, the District is maximizing our customer value and getting a prominent location when compared to a greenfield facility.”
The new location provides high visibility for NPPD and its customers, Becker said.
“With this long term commitment in mind and the need to consolidate our three work groups under one roof, we purchased the vacant building and will begin remodeling this month.” NPPD Economic Development Consultant Brian Vasa said.
“The partnership between the city of Ogallala and NPPD has been strong for more than 65 years and in October the City Council voted to extend the current electrical operations agreement for another 25 years,” Vasa said.
