Memorial Day services set at Fort McPhersonTell North Platte what you think

Memorial Day services will be held Monday, May 29 at the Fort McPherson National Cemetery and Shrine south of Maxwell.

The massing of the colors will begin at 2 p.m.

The featured speaker is Marvin L. Donnelly of Hershey, a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Donnelly was an Air force instructor throughout his military career. He retired in 2010.

He is a 1966 graduate of North Platte High.

From 1995 until Donnelly’s retirement, he was an instructor at the national Tempest school – where the mission is to protect information from foreign intelligence collection.

An experimental P51 airplane is expected to fly over during the ceremonies.

Fort McPherson was established by an act of Congress in 1873, near the site of the U.S. Army's fort that protected travelers on the Oregon and Cottonwood trails.

As of May 1, there were more than 11,500 internments in the national cemetery, in addition to 150 markers honoring veterans who are missing action, buried at sea or have had their ashes scattered. There are also 85 group burials.
