Tessa DeCent returns the ball in a doubles match.
The Hershey Lady Panthers varsity tennis team lost 8 -1 Tuesday to the powerful Lady Indians of Ogallala.Ogallala won five of six singles and all three doubles matches.
Senior Tessa DeCent secured Hershey’s only win, outlasting Annie Cleveland 8-6.
Hershey had a little more success in junior varsity doubles matches, narrowly losing 4-3.
First year Hershey coach Sarah Nichols has a young team that improves each match.
“Some of these girls have never had a racket in hand before this year,” Nichols said.
Nichols, a graduate of Millard West High School in Omaha, lives in North Platte and has been an avid tennis player for 22 years, but this is the first time she has ever coached.
She jumped at the opportunity.
“I was playing tennis at the rec center with last year’s coach and he asked me if I could help out with the team, and it kind of grew from there,” she said. “I am really enjoying it and plan on continuing next year.”
On Thursday, the team will host Kearney Catholic at North Platte.
