Police were summoned early Monday morning to a North Platte bar, where a man refused to leave.Police spokesman John Deal said at 12:29 a.m. Monday, officers went to Kelsey's Place to check out a report that a man was intoxicated, causing problems and refusing to leave at the request of employees.
When officers arrived, they escorted the man, Alejandro Gonzalez, 34, outside and told him to leave the property or he would be arrested, Deal said.
Gonzalez argued about it for “a period of time” and asked the officers if he could drive away. However, he showed numerous signs of being intoxicated, so he was told not to drive, according to the police report.
Eventually, Gonzalez walked away to the east, but several minutes later, was seen walking back to the bar parking lot, entering the vehicle and starting it.
Police contacted him in the vehicle and charged him with driving under the influence. The officers also saw Gonzalez’s children, ages 9 and 5, in the vehicle.
Deal said at no point earlier did Gonzalez mention he had his children with him. Police found the children were left outside in the car for about 30 minutes while he was in the bar, according to the report.
Deal said the two children were placed with their mother for the remainder of the night.
Gonzalez was taken to jail, where he refused to submit to a breath test at the jail, so he was also charged with refusal as well as two counts of child abuse, Deal said.
