Disputes in the village of Sutherland apparently escalated into property damage, when a village board member's tires were slashed. On Feb. 11, Sutherland Village Board Member Ray Ravenscroft reported two of his personal vehicles had slashed tires, the Lincoln County sheriff's office said. An investigation began with a deputy determining the tires were damaged by a sharp instrument.
After a couple weeks of investigation, Bruce Boggs, 34, was charged early this week for criminal mischief in the crimes.
Boggs is the husband of a former clerk for the village, Samantha. Samantha Boggs as well as the deputy clerk-secretary Heather Maxcy resigned abruptly in mid-December after two village board members, including Ravenscroft, went into the office and asked them for village records.
Boggs had held the position since 2007 and Maxcy since 2010.
The village board met in emergency session on Dec. 22 and hired a temporary clerk, Belinda Hanneman. Hanneman was a former village clerk for about 13 years, starting in 1996.
The board and the village have been in turmoil, especially since Boggs and Maxcy quit. Allegations have been made that three board members conspired in an illegal secret meeting, and one board member, John Sauer, resigned in disgust. A former board member, Ken Main, was appointed to replace Sauer.
This time, Bruce Boggs was cited for criminal mischief at the sheriff's office and released.
