North Platte attorney Richard Birch and Lincoln County Attorney Rebecca Harling have been nominated to become a new Nebraska District Judge, based in North Platte.

Birch and Harling were nominated Thursday from five applicants.

Gov. Dave Heineman will consider the nominations and make one choice in the coming weeks.

Either Harling and Birch will become an 11th judicial district judge to replace Judge John P. Murphy, who retired in August. Visiting Judge Dave Urbom of Kearney is one of the judges filling the bench, pending a final selection.

The 11th judicial district consists of 17 central and western Nebraska counties.
