In June 2009, widows of fallen Nebraska fire fighters challenged fire departments to raise money to build a Nebraska Fire and Rescue Memorial in Grand Island. To help raise the money, the Alda Fire Department will host a celebrity auction at the Heartland Event Center in Grand Island at 4 p.m. on April 10. The memorial, if it is built, would give every fire and rescue personnel a place of honor, organizers say. For the auction, more than 500 celebrities have been contacted and items are arriving daily. Some of the donated autographed items that will be auctioned: • Charlie Daniels, fiddle. • Bo Pelini and Tom Osborne, Nebraska Cornhusker football. • Tom Osborne, 18 X 36 print of the stadium at the 300th sellout game. • Troy Aikman, football. • Terry Isaac, a signed print of "Summer Song." • Brooks & Dunn, framed CMA best duo nomination envelope. • Four baseball tickets/Kansas City Royals. • Four baseball tickets/Omaha Royals. • USA gymnastics team, shirt autographed by eight gymnasts. • Four tickets to any concert in the United States More than 160 high-quality items will be auctioned either by live or silent auction, organizers say. Bids are currently being accepted online. For information, to donate, or for a complete list of items, go to www.4rfirefighters.info or email 4rfirefighters@charter.net Items can be seen on March 20-21 at the Conestoga Mall in Grand Island.
