A former Cozad Schools bookkeeper was arrested March 5 and charged with allegedly stealing from a school activities account. The Nebraska State Patrol reported that Brenda L. Sigler, 45, faces three class-three felony counts of theft by unlawful taking and four felony counts of second-degree forgery. Lt. Lynn Williams of the patrol said that the Cozad Police Department asked NSP to take the lead on the investigation. Sigler is accused of stealing funds from the activities account from 2002-2009 while she was employed as the account bookkeeper. Williams said the amount allegedly stolen is not yet public information but did say it was “substantial.” The Cozad schools fired its activities bookkeeper in August 2009 after about $218,000 went missing, according to news reports at that time. The investigation of Sigler lasted six months. She was booked into Dawson County jail and will be tried in Dawson County, Williams said.
