The Nebraska Department of Roads will build six new maintenance buildings across the state, including one in Lexington and one in Sidney. The new buildings will be used for transit and provide indoor storage space to protect vehicles from harsh weather, Sen. Ben Nelson said. The money will come from $4.6 million in stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The buildings will be located in Lexington, Holdrege, Western, Sidney, Kearney and Red Cloud. “These stimulus funds will help keep Nebraska’s rural roads well maintained even during the roughest weather,” said Nelson. Supporting high-quality infrastructure in rural communities makes a strong foundation for growth, he said. The Nebraska project is part of more than $600 million in new awards for 191 new transit projects in 42 states and Puerto Rico. The funds were announced Friday by the Federal Transit Administration, a part of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
