Jareb Liewer, a 2000 graduate of North Platte High School, is heading to Hollywood to tryout for the prize on American Idol. In his audition Tuesday in Denver, Liewer sang “Summer Highland Falls” by Billie Joel and “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5 for the judges. His joy was evident in the tumbling run he did in front of the camera after the performance. Along with his guitar and vocal skills, Jareb is a gymnast and an actor. He called himself an overly friendly gymnast during an introduction video that can be seen on the American Idol website. He also called himself a “small town, friendly guy” from North Platte who has lived in San Diego for five years, pursuing his goal of being a professional entertainer. Liewer recently performed in North Platte. During the Christmas holidays, he performed Dec. 26 at Open Mic Nite at A to Z Books downtown, singing and playing up-tempo original songs on acoustic guitar for an appreciative audience. Among Liewer’s acting credits, he starred as “Handy Sam” on “Kibbles Rockin' Clubhouse,” an educational video geared toward autistic children, which can be seen online at www.noteabilities.com. Liewer told the Bulletin he was pretty nervous at the Idol audition but “parlayed that nervous energy into a memorable performance.” “I'm very excited,” he said. Liewer (pronounced Leever) likes to play alternative and folk rock, much of it original. He likes to write and counts Ani DiFranco, Nirvana, Tori Amos, Elton John and Bright Eyes among his influences, according to the American Idol website. He said Adam Lambert's 2009 performance of the Johnny and June Carter song, "Ring of Fire" is one of his favorite performances. During his Idol interview, Liewer said he sees things from both sides and likes to be friendly. “I like to help someone feel better if they are feeling like crap,” he said.
